My name is Richard Demma and I’m a crime writer, reviewer and theater director. I’m currently living in the beautiful old world city of Prague in the Czech Republic, a city of great writers past and present, from Kafka, Karel Capek and Jaroslav Hasek, to Vaclav Havel, Jachym Topol and Daniela Hodrova.
I’m originally from San Francisco, California, but I’ve traveled the world for the past forty years and lived in seven different countries, including Thailand for twenty five years, Taiwan, Hong Kong and now the Czech Republic.
I’m a passionate aficionado of all kinds of serious fiction, but particularly works in the crime and mystery genres that deal with crimes in the global village, crimes of state and crimes against humanity. Any works of quality fiction that explore these areas are of interest to me, especially works that also include a religious and spiritual dimension. Graham Greene is my favorite crime novelist.
We live in the shadows in the twenty-first century, a world in which “God is silent,” and we search for glimmers of an eternal presence hidden behind the vicissitudes of life. The hidden face of God is the subject of my own personal quest, hidden behind unbearable suffering, cruelty and injustice – the stuff of crime novels..
I received a BA in English Literature from the University of San Francisco, A Masters in English/Creative Writing from San Francisco State University and a Masters in Divinity from the Graduate Theological Union, University of California, Berkeley. I am currently working on a crime novel set in Prague.
I’ve been a literature teacher and theatre director for over 40 years and have taught in four international schools. My last school was International School Prague. I am now currently semi-retired, but I act as a tour guide of Prague for visitors.
